Meet Dr. Smithen

Dr. Smithen has extensive experience in the treatment of retinal disease with particular expertise in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal vascular occlusions. She joins Diabetic Eye after an active career in academic medicine at George Washington University.

A native of New York, Dr. Smithen realized a childhood dream when she became a physician. She graduated from Princeton University with the cum laude distinction and then went on to earn her medical degree from Cornell Medical School. Dr. Smithen completed her ophthalmology residency and fellowship in the treatment of retinal disease at the prestigious Tufts-New England Eye Center in Boston. She is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Smithen has published dozens of articles and abstracts in leading scientific journals and has authored a number of chapters in distinguished medical texts. She has been asked to speak to her peers at ophthalmology meetings around the country. She holds membership in several professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Washington DC Metropolitan Ophthalmic Society. Dr. Smithen is also an invited founding member of the International Society for the Advancement of Medical Retina.

Dr Smithen enjoys helping her patients understand the complexities of their retinal disease and working with each patient to formulate a patient-specific treatment plan. She believes that a physician-patient partnership is essential to achieving the best results for her patients.

When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Smithen relishes her role as wife and mother to three young daughters and her dog, Barkley. She is an avid tennis player and sports enthusiast.

Dr. Smithen sees patients in both the Washington DC and Arlington, VA offices.
