Meet Dr. Mathura

Jeevan R. Mathura, Jr., MD, was born and raised in Washington, DC, and he’s proud to stay in the region, providing exceptional eye care at his practice, Retina & Macular Disease Specialists, in Arlington, Virginia. He specializes in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusive disease, ocular complications of AIDS and posterior uveitis, and vitreoretinal disease.

Dr. Mathura completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University with a cum laude distinction. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he developed an interest in both research and surgery. After being selected as an Intramural Research Training Award Fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Mathura conducted a year of research, studying neurotransmitter receptor biology.

Continuing his medical education, Dr. Mathura completed two years of general surgery training at LA County/USC Medical Center and the Washington Hospital Center. His desire to continue research and pursue a career in ophthalmology brought him to the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, where he became a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Retinal Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory.

Dr. Mathura completed his ophthalmology residency at Nassau University Medical Center/SUNY Stonybrook, followed by a prestigious fellowship in Diseases of the Retina at Northwestern University. He became a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) in 2004 and was re-certified by the ABO in 2014.

Before starting his private practice, Dr. Mathura was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and an attending physician at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Vitreoretinal Service at the George Washington University. He has also been the principal investigator and co-investigator in multiple clinical trials and has authored journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Mathura has been happily married for over 16 years and enjoys the privilege of raising his three children.
